Give Young Patients a Voice: Children's Hospital Hackathon

Calling All Developers!

We need your help in building a feedback app for the young patients of COSMIC, the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of St. Mary’s Hospital in London. The desired app will help COSMIC capture important information from children and their families after their stay. All children admitted onto the Unit are critically ill and need life support. St. Mary’s PICU is the only unit of its kind in West London.

Unfortunately, existing feedback systems are not engaging enough for children and are very expensive. Meanwhile, those children who are admitted are often very ill, so requesting feedback during their stay isn't always appropriate and it’s very difficult to get children and families to give feedback after discharge from the hospital. Yet, insight from these very special patients will enable COSMIC to shape future services and help provide the best possible care.

Saturday 31 May 2014, Zendesk, a longtime supporter of COSMIC, is sponsoring a very exciting hackathon to build an app that can gather this critical feedback. Over the course of a day, you'll build an innovative app/game that compels patients to provide feedback that's simple and engaging. Your projects will be judged by our esteemed panel and the top three projects will be handsomely rewarded (see prizes below).

As developers, it's so easy to get buried in feature work and deliverables that we forget about our incredible ability to help people in a huge way, with just a few lines of code and a little bit of effort. We hope to pack the room with amazing and talented devs who can deliver a solution that's been on this charity's wish list for a very long time. Please join us for a great cause!

Rules:
Teams can be comprised of 4 individuals (single attendees will be put into teams on the morning of the event at the venue)
Must have a working app/game; Projects do not have to be related to or use any component of Zendesk to be eligible to win a prize
Must present your app/game in an up to 3 minute presentation

Schedule:

9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. -- Registration, breakfast, and team building
10 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. -- Overview of the day's challenge and housekeeping items
10:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. -- HACK!!!
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. -- Lunch is served(Can continue hacking)
3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. -- Afternoon snacks are served(Can continue hacking)
7:30 p.m. -- Submissions are due/Cocktail Party begins
7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m Judging of all eligible solutions
8:30 p.m. Announcement of winners
10 p.m. -- Party wraps up…
